United Nude for Iris van Herpen

It was in the last London Fashion Week when we saw the result of the cooperation between United Nude and Iris van Herpen for the first time at van Herpen’s Fall/Winter 2010-11 show.

The most architectural footwear brand around and the designer that often injects striking elements and motifs borrowed from architecture into her designs, came together and the result was black and ivory ankle boots characterised by smooth lines with a golden three-dimensional motif on the upper and on the heel. The boots, which are entirely handmade with high quality Italian kid leather, will be released in a limited edition.

Holly Fulton A/W 2010

After graduating from ECA (Edinburgh College of Art) in 1999, Holly Fulton decided to create her own label and took many risks in order to succeed. Finally her work and effort was recognised as an award-wining label by Vogue and many fashion icons. Last year she presented her collection for A/W 2009  in London Fashion Week by standing out due to use of intense colours and patterns.

This is her A/W 2010 collection influenced from art deco, graphics and clashing materials.

David LaChapelle - American Jesus @ Paul Kasmin gallery, New York

American photographer/director David LaChapelle, who while still in High school, made his first steps as a photographer next to Andy Warhol, introduced us to an image of the big stars of our times different from the one we’re used to, directing them into scenes from the bible and paintings of the Renaissance classics.

Michael Jackson pictured as a martyr, saint and savior, Naomi Campbell starring in a Botticelli, Courtney Love holding Kurt in her arms like the mother of Jesus and a whole lot of other celebrities have stood till today before LaChapelle’s camera. A series of his poppy, religious-themed work will be on show in Paul Kasmin gallery, New York till September, demonstrating the camp, charm, insanity and talent of one of the most sought-after fashion photographers of his generation.

Summer Kisses Winter Tears - Kostis Velonis

Interview: YORGOS KELEFIS/ Photography: NIKOLAS VENTOYRAKIS

Kostis Velonis is what could easily be described as a ‘a significant artist of the younger generation’. However, he is far from being just that; a restless spirit, one that dares to deal with difficult issues during hard times. At 42 and through his current exhibition at the national Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens he hangs between nostalgia and utopia, wanting to speak on today’s loneliness through the collective failure of the past.

Do you believe that art is inevitably political and do you feel political yourself as a contemporary artist?

Art has always been a place where politics take place. It offers vision, positions, controversy, resistance, criticism, aesthetics, ways of living. Through this framework and in accordance to my role I invent and formulate politics and nothing more. Politics of art is essentially the difference from the current ‘politics’ of politics. Politics of art is heterogeneity and differentiation in all tangible levels as well as an ability to transform how life is practised.

In your exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens there are references to the Russian avant-garde as well as the ancient Greek democracy. What is it that mostly attracts you in each of these concepts and what do you think might be their significance today? Continue reading Summer Kisses Winter Tears – Kostis Velonis
